US: Pennsylvania Horticultural Society awards proven quality

The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society has selected two trees, two shrubs and four perennials and awarded them with the PHS Gold Medal Plant. With these awards the society recognizes exceptional plants for the home gardener and professional landscaper.

The 2016 Gold Medal Plant Winners include well-known, widely grown cultivars, among them Ilex verticillata ‘Red Sprite’. Already in 2012 the PennState Extension posted an article about this native winterberry, mentioning Ilex verticillata ‘Red Sprite’ as one of the best. “A dwarf selection that grows with a rounded habit to three to five feet tall. Valued for good fruit production and persistence,” the extension service said.
