Jürgen von den Driesch, Brandkamp:

"High demand for smaller sized lantanas"

The lantana is a popular and well known plant as it is easy to care for. For many years, breeders have been investing in enhancing the characteristics of the plant and making it more attractive, not only for the end user but also for the grower. Brandkamp, a breeder of several bedding plants, also spent many years on improving their lantana and they succeed. Seven years ago, they introduced a short growing bushy plant with many flowers, named the Tropic Lantana. As the popularity of this variety increased sharply, they started to breed new colors. Last year, they added red, the last color that completes the series. This is explained by Jürgen von den Driesch, Sales Manager at Brandkamp.

Special shape
The Tropic Lantana is a bushy plants with many flowers and short internodes. According to von den Driesch, this Lantana variety can be used for more purposes as it is not as huge and high growing as the regular ones. "In the past, the lantanas were only suitable for big containers. Now, as the Tropic Lantana is available in 10, 11 and 12 cm pots, they can be used for any kind of pot. They can be even placed in the window," says von den Driesch. Over the years, they introduced new colors and last year, they added the final color; red. According to von den Driesch, this red color completes the Tropic Lantana series. "The Tropic Lantana is available in almost any color you can imagine. Currently, the series consist of seven colors; orange, white, citron, gold, pink, lila and red," says von den Driesch.

High demand
Over the years, the demand for this smaller sized lantana has increased. "It has always been a very popular plant as it is easy to care for in the summer; after flowering, the old flowers do not have to be removed and watering every day is not necessary. Now, this smaller sized lantana can be used for more purposes as it does not grows as large as the regular varieties anymore. Customers really value this new shape as we see the sales increasing every year," says von den Driesch.

More plants per square meter

It is an attractive plant to grow not only for the customers, but also for the growers. "As the plants are smaller, the grower can cultivate more plants per square meter. Now, we see growers growing and selling million of plants every season. In the past, this was not even possible," he says.

Improving varieties
The Tropic Lantana series can be considered complete. However, Brandkamp will not stop. "There are always characteristics that can be enhanced. So even though we have all the colors we want, we will keep investing in the breeding of this variety to make it even better," says von den Driesch.

Brandkamp will present the Tropic Lantana, together with other popular varieties like the Jollies fuchsias and the Pemba pot chrysanthemums at the IPM Essen in Germany. "At the show, we will introduce some new Jollies varieties in new colors. Also the Pemba pot chrysanthemums are on display. This assortment currently consists of six colors which are all equally growing and flowering." Brandkamp's booth can be found in hall 2 stand 2C31.
