Mogens Nyegaard Olesen, Poulsen Roser A/S:

"More colors needed to increase popularity indoor clematis"

"The interest for the indoor clematis is high, but this flowering plant is still quite unknown," says Mogens Nyegaard Olesen of Poulsen Roser A/S, the owner and head breeder of the roses and clematis. Poulsen Roser introduced their first indoor clematis in 2000. They expect the popularity of this plant to grow as more colors will be introduced in the future, and consumers will learn about the long shelf life of the product. "Our Garland® varieties, for example, flower up to 2 months in the house and can be planted in the garden later, where they grow back every year," says Olesen.

Huge interest
According to Mogens N. Olesen, the interest for the indoor clematis is good and increases as it is a strong variety with a long shelf life. "They keep their quality during transport, on the shelves at the store and will flower for several weeks at the consumer's home. Afterwards, when they are done flowering, they can planted in the garden, on the terrace or balcony," says Olesen.

Still unknown
In spite of the high interest, the indoor clematis is still quite unknown. "In the coming years, we expect the popularity to grow as Poulsen Roser will introduce new attractive colors, like strong red and pink colors."

Indoor clematis collection
Currently, the indoor clematis collection of Poulsen Roser consists of around 30 varieties in 4 collections. These collections are the Boulevard®, Garland®, Tudor Patio®, and Paillette®. "The most popular collection is the Boulevard as it contains the most colors," says Olesen, but he is convinced that the Garland® varieties will grow in popularity because of their excellent shelf life.

Finishes in 6 weeks
For the growers, the clematis has a couple of advantages. According to Olesen, they are easy to grow from what we call a 'ready' half plant only 6 weeks from potting to finish. "Besides that, it is a superb genus to work with as they require little or no heat," says Olesen
