NL: Determining the origin of roses

Is a flower or a food crop truly cultivated in the Netherlands? Are the roses I buy for Valentine’s Day produced fairly? Researchers of the Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences of the University of Amsterdam, together with the independent expertise centre Naktuinbouw, developed forensic examinations to determine the origin of plants.



In cooperation with the rose nursery Rosa Natura methods are being developed for the determination of the origin of roses. The results of this first pilot study show that the developed method has potential to distinguish between Dutch roses and, for example, Indian or Kenyan roses.

CSI in the horticulture

Forensic technologies such as DNA- and isotope research offer new possibilities for means of proof. The relative proportion of isotopes in plants is strongly tied to the local growing conditions such as the temperature, the air humidity and the soil. By means of isotopic analysis it is possible to identify where the plant material is cultivated. With the independent determination of origin, suppliers can
reduce the distrust of retailers and consumers, and it can also serve against fraud. In addition to the determination of the origin of roses, the investigations focus on trees and the determination of origin of pepper.



Amsterdam Green Campus
The investigation takes place at the Amsterdam Green Campus. In this regional platform researchers, educational institutions and entrepreneurs work together on innovation and the training of talent within the green sector. Within the metropolitan region you will find some of the most innovative horticultural regions of Europe with extensive green knowledge. Within the Green Campus in collaboration with Greenport Aalsmeer and Greenport Noord-Holland existing knowledge is linked with innovation, scientific investigation and education, an asset to stay one step ahead of the competition from abroad.
