NL: Large scale trials for chrysanthemum on water

In week 10 the first trial with chrysanthemum on water in the newly restructured trial greenhouse at Proeftuin Zwaagdijk started. The purpose of the reorganisation of the greenhouse was to approach the practice as closely as possible. In the newly restructured greenhouse the acreage is 80% larger than in the former situation. The large basin is now more than four times larger than the one used in the trials last year.

In the first trial the effect of this scaling up and the effect of the water temperature will be studied. The effect of a substance added to the water that will increase the resilience of the plant will also be studied. As in previous trials there will be two varieties planted, namely ‘Bacardi’ and ’Alero’.

The trial is the first in a series of trials running in the present year and the first half of next year. In addition to the above mentioned topics follow-up trials will also examine a hydroponic cultivation system (with LEDs a.o.), the climate of the greenhouse and the effect of oxygen in the water.

During the trials the development of thrips will be closely monitored because it appears that this pest insect does not develop that well in this cultivation system.

Apart from the questions about the cultivation techniques the project will also address the commercial aspects of a practical application.

The following parties are involved in the trials: Fred van Paassen, Green Simplicity, Bovebo, Dekker Chrysanten, Fides by Dümmen Orange, Botman Hydroponics BV, KaRo BV, van Iperen and de Kamer van Koophandel/Innovatiemotor Greenport Aalsmeer. In addition to the named parties LTO Fondsen will make a significant financial contribution.
