NL: BloomPost guarantees freshness with oxygen
In a recent survey by the Dutch television program Kassa, online flower shops didn’t get off so well. In many cases the quality of the flowers turned out to be disappointing. To prove that this can be done differently BloomPost discloses a technique with which they say they can guarantee the freshness of flowers.
Measuring oxygen requirement
Thanks to an invention which has been in use in the fruit and vegetable sector through partner company Perfotec for some time, BloomPost is capable of measuring the oxygen demand of flowers fresh off the land. A micro laser then treats the package with just enough oxygen for the flowers to stay alive and prevent them from further growth. The flowers are ‘put to sleep’ so to speak and can go without water for five days. Once the recipient awakens the flowers the bouquet remains fresh in a vase for a guaranteed nine days.
Mailbox flowers
In the first phase the technique was already used on so-called ‘mailbox flowers': a bunch of roses wrapped in special foil in a convenient format that fits through the mailbox. CEO Dave van Stijn: "With this first application we have shown that it is possible to keep flowers fresh without water for up to five days, after which they can still be shown off in a vase for at least 9 days. The reactions of users throughout Europe are very good and in the online reviews we’ve invariably scored the highest figure of all online flower shops. After extensive testing we can now also guarantee satisfaction for large bouquets."
Worldwide interest
Worldwide flower parties and leading retailers visit BloomPost daily to start applying the technique as soon as possible. Because water is no longer needed to keep the flowers fresh, this creates a lot of new possibilities, cost savings and quality improvement in various places in the flowers chain. An attractive development for the flower business market.
Netherlands first
Even before the technology is deployed in the business market, the Dutch consumer will be able to buy the new bouquet line. As of this week big bouquets can also be put together as a flower gift to be delivered by courier with a greeting card and stylish gift box.
