World’s largest orchid blooms at Cayman’s Botanic Park

The ‘Queen of Orchids’, Grammatophyllum speciosum, is starting to bloom at the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park.

“Currently the flower spike is 3 to 5 feet in length, and may reach up to 7 to 8 feet in length,” said the park’s general manager, John Lawrus.

“With the first bloom opening a few weeks ago, it should be in bloom for another month at least,” he said, adding that the flower spike can grow up to a half inch a day in perfect conditions.
