US(CA): Orchids form tropical wonderland in desert

Growing orchids in the desert? Yes, Gubler Orchids is doing so. In the high desert community of Landers, California, they have been growing thousands, and all kinds of orchids for over 40 years now. In this video below, made by Palm Springs Oasis, you can see how the tropical wonderland is surrounded by sand.

The Gubler family has loved and grown orchids for three generations. Originally in Switzerland, Gubler Orchids was opened in 1918 by Heir Gubler. It was his second son, Hans, who moved to California to chase the american dream and in 1954 started Gubler Orchids (US) selling the orchids literally from his station wagon. Now it is Hans’ son, Chris, who continues the legacy, along with his sister, Heidi.
In 1975, they added this nursery in the high desert community of Landers, California. Clean air, great water quality, one of the sunniest locations in the US, and four seasons made this an ideal location. Gublers is now selling orchids all over the world including some major retailers in the United States.
