Mail order company offers convenient way to expand markets

Mail order companies that supply plants. It's an upcoming trend that enables ornamental suppliers to expand their markets. Also Fleurizon, a US young plant trading company, reached out to end consumers a couple of years ago and is now supplying consumers in Germany, the Netherlands, France and the USA through mail order companies. Owner Frank de Greef is very pleased with this way of selling and is planning to expand its markets in the UK in a similar manner.

Expanding markets
"We already sell to growers in the UK, but we expect to reach new customers as mail order companies have a different audience. Moreover, when selling through a mail order company, we can really show what our products will look like when they are mature, not only by a picture on the internet, but often also in a television programme."

In order to reach these mail order companies, De Greef appointed Michael Perry, a freelancer who describes himself as an ultimate plant geek. He's been 'obsessed' with plants for over 30 years and sees good opportunities for Fleurizon's products on the UK market.

A lot of interest for Fleurizon's products at the IPM Essen.

Demand for extraordinary plants
"Fleurizon's products are extraordinary and this is something people are looking for nowadays", says Perry. "People are traveling all over the world and come across many different and unusual plants. Fleurizon's broad assortment of products enables them to have these plants at home and relive their vacation." Gardeners and even traditional gardeners are also eager to try out new varieties. "They always have the budget to experiment with new products. They test it for a year, analyze the results and decide if they want to move on with that variety." So, for these groups, the plant does not only need to be extraordinary, but it also needs to be of high quality and easy to maintain. "And many plants in Fleurizon's assortment are", adds Perry.

Interest varies
At the IPM Essen that took place last week, some large mail order companies visited Fleurizon's booth and showed their interest in particular products. "It is interesting to see how each mail order company varies in the demand regarding the products. So, with this in mind, we need to have a deep think what to offer to what mail order company", says De Greef.
