Most popular Bergenia varieties in Germany

What is the most beautiful Bergenia? This question was asked by the German association of perennial growers (Bund deutscher Staudengärtner) in a questionnaire distributed among the readers of the magazine 'Mein schöner Garten' the end of January 2017.

They showed three Bergenia varieties and asked for their favorite. Nearly a third of the 1.976 participants voted for the `Eroica´ variety. The violet red flowers last very long and are suitable as cut flower. During cold weather, the leaves turn green-red and according to the German association of perennial growers this change of color might be the reason for its high ranking.

The comments showed that the readers adore the beautiful leaves of the plant and the fact that it is a easy to care for plant. Bergenia's seem to have a fanclub in the perennial group. Common comments are: "They become more vigorous year after year" and "It is a difficult decision, because all varieties are beautiful."

The ranking is as follows:
1. ‘Eroica’ 31,6 %
2. ‘Bressingham White’ 24,4 %
3. ‘Biedermeier’ 20 %
4. ‘Pink Dragonfly’ 16,1 %
5. ‘Oeschberg’ 7,9 %

The Association of German Perennials and the magazine 'Mein schöner Garten' will continue this cooperation for the perennial of the year 2018.
