25 years of plant innovation at Tesselaar

In horticulture, great business moments are rare and usually involve plenty of hard work. But that’s exactly what happened to Anthony Tesselaar twenty five years ago.

Groundcover rose
While busy working in the family horticultural company in Australia, he was introduced to a new and distinctively different plant. This was something that didn't fit into the company’s bulb and flower business.

It was a groundcover rose that was more disease tolerant than all others, could produce up to 2000 flowers each year, and was so easy to grow. More importantly it required no fancy pruning. It was called the Flower Carpet rose and bred by Noack’s of Germany.

Major challenge
To take it on or not was a heavy decision and a major challenge. It meant leaving a very successful family company to begin a whole new direction.

From marketing bulbs and flowers to creating a whole new business of introducing “distinctively different plants.” It began in Australia and operations quickly moved to Europe and North America.

Anthony says “Flower Carpet roses were a sensation when they were first released 25 years ago throughout Australia. They continue to be well loved and trusted to this day in all the markets they are sold in. I consider Flower Carpet truly to be the wonder rose."
