High tech propagation greenhouse for Scottish garden

On Friday, March 31, the new glasshouse development at NTS Inverewe Garden was officially opened by David Knott. He is curator of Living Collections at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Edinburgh. Inverewe is one of the most well-known gardens in Europe and one of the most visited parks in Scotland. And now, it's also among Europe's most modern propagation facilities.

This glasshouse, commissioned by the National Trust of Scotland and built by Smiemans Projecten in Holland (in conjunction with AJ Engineering) includes a potting area, half hardy area and propagation area, which were realized by a specialized fixed and movable cultivating tables with irrigation facilities. It also includes a computer-controlled climate system, which controls the temperature, shading and ventilation for four different zones. This project will help to conserve the past and grow the garden of the future.

 

The facility consists of various constructions and a Venlo greenhouse. All in all, 48 propagation trays, a rain water silo and a foil greenhouse were realized. The gable and roof of the propagation rooms have been constructed with glass. For the other rooms, including the office, sandwich panels were used.



The complex contains rooms for potting and propagating, but also rooms where plants can overwinter or develop from young to mature plant. This has been made possible with a specially tailored facility, including trays and irrigation. This also includes a computer-controlled climate system, which controls temperature, screens and ventilation for the four zones.
