Choosing a fertilizer for Mums and Perennials

With the recent introductions of PRO-MIX products with ‘coir chunks’, the producer has been getting questions about which PRO-MIX product is best suited for perennials, mums and small nursery containers.

Premier Tech Horticulture produces several PRO-MIX blends that are suitable for these applications, including peat/bark blends and peat/chunk coir blends. All PRO-MIX products contain a wetting agent to facilitate water absorption and distribution, limestone for pH adjustment and a starter nutrient charge to help plants acclimate after potting.

Their peat/bark blends are heavier weight products and provide low water retention compared to peat/chunk coir blends that are lighter weight and have high water retention. For these products they offer the choice of adding Mycorrhizae, which is a beneficial fungus that assists plants in the acquisition of water and some nutrients. Mycorrhizae produces more vigorous plants with more prolific flowering.

They also offer Biofungicide as an additive which is a bacterium that suppresses certain root pathogens, including Fusarium, Pythium and Rhizoctonia.
