US (VA): PHCC's agriculture program greenhouse shuts down

The greenhouse sale at Patrick Henry Community College recently had its last day – not just for this spring, but ever.

The greenhouse has had a sale each spring, traditionally for two days at the start of May. It was open Thursday and will be open today from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

What’s going to be done with the greenhouse now that PHCC’s agriculture program is being closed is unknown, said John Ayers, an Associate Professor of Agribusiness, Viticulture/Encology, Horticulture and Business Management at PHCC.

The plants which are left over after the greenhouse sale will continue to be for sale at Collinsville Produce Mart, which Ayers owns, he said, adding that that’s what has been done each year.

Tonya Judd is an adjunct in horticulture at PHCC for the dual enrollment program with Bassett High School (BHS). She said that the BHS students planted the greenhouse plants with seeds donated by Kroger. PHCC provided the pots, soil and plugs as well as paid for operation of the greenhouse.

No more agriculture classes will be taught at the college, she said, “but some of the agribusiness classes will still be going” so that students may finish their degrees.
