Qatar blockade forces flowers to take detour

Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Bahrain and Yemen severed ties with Qatar, which has major consequences for the country's aviation and logistical position.

All flights between Qatar and the listed countries have been halted. The only land border between Qatar and Saudi Arabia has also been closed, and countries including Saudi Arabia and Bahrain have closed their airspace to Qatar Airways. Sea shipping between Qatar and these countries isn't possible either. It's not known how long these blockades will remain in place.

Flowers take detour
Qatar Airways is a major shipper of flowers from Ethiopia to Amsterdam. Because the airspace of Saudi Arabia and Egypt has been closed to Qatar Airways, and with the no-fly zones in Iraq, Syria and Libya, the Amsterdam – Doha – Addis Abeba route has been forced into taking detours. This causes extra transport time and higher (fuel) costs.
