India: The men of pitch-perfect roses

Kasturi Rangan is the proud owner of India's largest rose nursery. He has already catalogued 2,000 varieties in his nursery, and has an amazing collection of over 4,500 varieties of roses. He is also said to be the only rose breeder to trial exotic varieties in India. KSG's roses are grown in all parts of the country and plants are supplied to various states, central government departments and private gardens. Prominent gardens include Centenary Rose Garden at Ooty and Rashtrapathi Bhavan Gardens.

KSG's has a unique distinction of encouraging other breeders — most of them amateurs — by releasing their cultivars and including them in their catalogue. They have played a huge role in promoting rose breeding culture in the country. KSG's brings out a colourful catalogue of roses every year. A new and specially developed variety of rose was dedicated to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014. The rose, 'Saffron-Vermillion Red with Yellow River' has German Parentage and has been carefully developed after nearly five years of research and development at the renowned KSG's Roses. Referring to the roses named after VVIPs, Kasturi Rangan says there are many protocols to be followed before a rose is dedicated to any dignitaries, the most important being his consent. In fact, a country-wide search had been made to acquire the best and unique rose sapling and finally the team zeroed in on one at KSG's nursery in dedication to Modi.
