NL: Tulips acreage grows with 500 hectares

The Flower Bulb Inspection Service (Bloembollenkeuringsdienst; BKD) has new figures concerning the acreage of bulbous plants. What is immediately clear, is a substantial increase in the acreage of tulips, which is increasing by more than 500 hectares this year. In the previous years, this has also increased significantly: between 2014/2015 and 2016/2017 with over 1,100 hectares. This year the total acreage of tulips will be over 12,500 hectares.

The other bulb flowers are fairly stable: the daffodil decreases slightly, the hyacinth increases a bit, the rest remains about the same. Incidentally, none of these crops is in any relation to the tulip: daffodil and hyacinth amount to 1,200 to 1,300 hectares, crocus and allium fluctuate around 200 and 300, muscari between 150 and 200 and the remaining exclusive species on a few dozen hectares.

The statistics of the BKD can be seen here.
