NL: A sustainable packaging for a grateful plant

In the supply chain there is a demand for sustainable products. The consumer is familiar with the images of the plastic debris in the oceans and is becoming more critical on the packaging of products. However the challenge is to package your product in such a way that it is attractive and saleable.

Packaging with a personal touch
PostPlants therefore introduced Pimp Your Plant two years ago. Owner Henk Post talks about the concept: "The anthuriums are delivered in a mat pot that has been treated with chalk paint in various colors, complete with a box of chalks. It is not only an original idea for Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day, but also when grandchildren write a message for grandfather and grandmother, that of course is very nice."

Under the label Nathurium the company from Pijnacker works on sustainable products. "Pimp Your Plant is one of the ideas, but we do have more."

"We would like to offer a product in a fully recyclable packaging, hence a cardboard tray and a biodegradable pot. And whether we will use craft material or bioplastic, that is something we still have to look into," says Henk.

Thankful plant
Henk Post has been cultivating anthuriums for about 25 years and knows everything about them. "It is a very grateful plant. It thrives best on the windowsill facing north or east. The originally South American plant needs a lot of light, but a bright sun may burn the leaves. With enough light and sufficient water, new flowers keep on coming and you will enjoy the plant for a long time."

In the first few years Post cultivated cutting anthuriums. When about thirteen years ago a new greenhouse was taken into service, the switch was made to potted plants. "On the one hand because at the time there was a market for it, but also because this greenhouse was already equipped for potted plants."

New varieties
Seven varieties are being cultivated in the PostPlants greenhouse: Sierra (red), Joli (pink), Aramon (brown), Colorado (pink), Siera Magic with special flowering stem, Sierra Orange and Sierra White all in pot size 14 cm exclusively available at the Pijnacker grower.

The classic red anthuriums still find their way to the consumer, but the variety is bigger nowadays. Henk: In particular the younger consumer is interested in new shapes and colors. Here the purple variety Fiorino, for example, is much in demand."
