NL: Mans Flowers expands greenhouse once again

What began in 2012 as a gerbera nursery of 3.2 hectares has now grown into an 8 hectare nursery. Owner Marius Mans once grew up among flowers and after he finished his education he rented a small nursery. Then in 2012 he built his own gerbera nursery, which was the first one designed according to Het Nieuwe Telen (Next Generation Growing - NGG) principles by installing air handling units.

A second section of 2.6 hectares was built in 2015. NGG was further developed in this section and heat recovery units were installed, among other things, resulting in a higher yield of warm greenhouse air in combination with outside air. In addition, this part of the nursery was the first gerbera nursery with diffuse glass, which provides better light distribution.

This year the nursery will be further expanded to a total of 8 hectares. The new 2.2 hectare addition will largely have the same layout as the section built in 2015. The greenhouse has features such as roof irrigation, double screen and air handling units. All this is controlled by the central Priva Connext computer.

In addition, a Priva Vialux M-Line has been installed for the disinfection of water. Previously, only the drain water was disinfected, but in order to prevent any risks, the rainwater is now also disinfected. The goal is to reuse all water.

For lighting, Hortilux 1,000 watt luminaires were chosen, which provide about 12,000 Lux. This is a higher light intensity than in the existing greenhouse. Mans Flowers grows 40 different types of gerberas and with the different light levels they are able to prepare better for the holidays, for example. Red, pink and purple gerberas are grown in the winter under the highest light level, so that they can be sold during Christmas and Valentine's Day.

Stolze is responsible for the electrical and water-technical installation and the assimilation lighting. At the moment, they are working on the realization of the electro-technical infrastructure above ground. It’s expected that in week 23 the first plants will go into the greenhouse.
