Mycorrhizal fungi now available for propagators and nurseries

Following on from the RGPro Horti 1 Open Field mix mycorrhizal fungi product, PlantWorks offers now a new mycorrhizal and bio stimulant product suitable for use in nursery production, which is called Rgpro Horti 2.

"This bio-fertiliser contains a mix of beneficial mycorrhizal fungal species with added plant derived amino acids that will help to accelerate the root colonisation process. The product has been specifically designed for use with nursery grown plants and can be used at any stage of propagation, either as an additive blended within the potting media or as a layer directly under the roots when potting on liners or young plants."

Klara Hajdu, head of the horti team at PlantWorks comments, "Many of the substrates used in nursery production do not contain any beneficial soil microbes. RGPro Horti 2 offers the chance to build essential mycorrhizal communities and beneficial bacteria into the root systems of nursery plants, to support their establishment and early growth as well as dramatically enhancing plant health as they leave the nursery. We have been very pleased with the feedback from trials in 2017 where nurseries have reported significant reductions in plant mortality and stronger healthier plants."

Many UK growers are asking their agronomist or nursery supplier about how best to use beneficial microbes and in particular mycorrhizal fungi in production. “This new product is the culmination of 4 years research in laboratory and field trials” Klara adds “we are currently running 22 separate research projects on over 15 crop types, further results will be published as they arrive.”

"The amount required should be enough to cover the base of the roots of the plant being potted on, for plug plants this might only be a few grams. Only one application during the propagation process is needed, this keeps input costs low yet maintaining ongoing benefits as the plants establish."
