NL: Commotion over closed auction day in run-up to Mother's Day

No auction will take place at Royal FloraHolland (except from the location in Eelde) on May 10 (Ascension Day). As Mother's Day is around the corner, Dutch growers and traders are furious and do not understand the decision of the auction.

The arguing parties meet each other in reactions on Social Media. A tweet of Dutch flower trader Dave van der Meer, for example: "Busiest week of the year, summer-like temperatures and @FloraHolland they close their doors on Thursday May 10... Little knowledge and feeling with the trade in the Ivory tower" (Translated from Dutch). Aad van den Enden, Manager at Royal FloraHolland, defends the auction by pointing out the fact that such decisions are always only made in coordination with customers and growers. All can be read back here (Dutch).

A Dutch newspaper (AD) spoke with several Dutch growers and traders and draw the following conclusion. Growers now have a lot to offer and want to sell it, however, the larger trading companies, who can hold stock more easily and fill more carts afterwards, a day off does not seem to be a problem (on top of that, it is cheaper because of the higher labor costs.)
