The Great Outdoors by Phil Hirst wins ‘Best Show Garden’

Show garden medals announced at second RHS Chatsworth Flower Show

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has today awarded medals to the five show gardens featuring at the RHS Chatsworth Flower Show, partnered by Wedgwood.

One Gold medal was awarded to ‘The Great Outdoors’ garden by Phil Hirst.

Three Silver Gilt medals were awarded to the John Deere: 100 Years of Tractors Garden by Elspeth Stockwell and Jo Fairfax, the Macmillan Cancer Support Legacy Garden by Michael Coley and the CCLA: A Family Garden by Amanda Waring and Laura Arison.

A Silver medal was awarded to Hay Time in the Dales by Chris Myers.

In addition to the Gold medal, ‘The Great Outdoors’ was awarded the coveted title of ‘Best Show Garden’.

An RHS Judging Panel spokesman said: “The garden is exactly true to the brief, in that he made a beautiful domestic garden in a variety of beautiful materials on a limited budget. The planting is full of interest and variety, particularly with the lovely foreground meadow.

“The garden is thoughtfully broken into different sections with a striking use of timber.

“The overall high quality runs through everything from hard landscaping to planting and the garden sits beautifully within the festival grounds. It really has been put together artfully.”

‘The Great Outdoors’ is a celebration of the natural, local environment designed to evoke the beauty of the woodland and moors through the structures and planting and is a place to relax after enjoying the great outdoors.
