Russia: Outdoor rose grower keeps expanding

Growing roses outdoors in Russia may seem a bit unusual, but Zheleny Dom is doing exactly that. “We are located in South Russia and the climate here is actually that good that we focus in the coming years to expand in open air.” Speaking is Matirny Anatoily, who is working as the Chief Agronomist with Zheleny Dom for over six years.

“We are the first and only grower in Russia to grow roses outside. However the varieties we grow, Piano and Rokoko, are very popular on the Russian market. This and next year we will expand our area for testing outdoor roses. Hip Hop Roses from De Ruiter Innovations are also on our field. The first results look promising."

Piano

New greenhouse
The company grows roses on 5 hectares, not only in the open field, but also in several greenhouses. In 2019 the new greenhouse with 4.5 hectares will be ready. During the IFTF in November, they have contact with breeders to make the final decision what varieties they are going to grow.

Rococo

Zheleny Dom started in November 2010. The company wasn’t flourishing all the time. “In fact, we were on the edge of going bankrupt. It was a tough time, because we grew only two varieties, Red Naomi and Avalance+ and prices weren’t good. Thanks to our director Bibcheva Evgenia Alexandrovna the company recovered. As a lawyer she came in 2014 from a whole other branch. When the owner asked her for help, she came to the rescue, moving 1500 km.”

"She showed leadership is based on three points: competence, integrity and creativity. She and the new team understood that a company should have purpose in order to grow. The flower market changes very fast and with it, customers are looking for a changing offer. Therefore now we offer a wide range of 20 varieties and we are carefully study the latest trends.”

Rich Bubbles

That is why the company has set up a 1000 m2 test area for breeders. “We test a lot of varieties from Dutch and German breeders. Every year breeders come and visit us. One of the breeders we work very closely is De Ruiter Innovations. They help us if we have any questions and we have a good relationship”, Matirny says. “Over the past six months we tested two new spray roses, Silver Bubbles and Rich Bubbles, and we are planning to grow them.”
