Australia’s only flower auction recognised for innovation with award

Christensen's Flower Auction has been recognised for its commitment to digital innovation and the transformative impact it has had on the industry with a Westpac Businesses of Tomorrow 2018 award.

The award highlights the work that it has continuously undertaken since its aggressive move into the digital age in 2001.

Through the company's pursuit of innovative automation processes it has achieved efficiencies and levels of accuracy that enable it to instantly meet the needs of the supply chain - driven by the flower auction’s core purpose of assisting flower retailers to succeed.

These live interactions have been the driving force behind its in-house developed suite of technological tools and market advancements created for its customers to use.

"Roughly 80 per cent of the money generated through our online flower market is paid back to the farm gate," Group CEO, Nicki Christensen, said as he shared the company's vision for the future which includes a flattening of the supply chain with a more advanced focus on interconnectedness.

"For commercial benefits to be realised to the fullest potential the customer must be moving closer towards the flower supplier. Through the utilization of technology and the internet of things (IOT) this will be enabled. Further increased volumes of transactions will be conducted through efficient and transparent tools to the benefit of all."

Christensen added that: "the current fascination with blockchain is understandable from our point of view as our company has been operating a practical real world application of this ideal that replicates many of the positive aspects of it exactly.

“The immediate transparent sharing of information, the conducting of transactions without fear of non-completion, and the absence of any master-slave relationships makes the flower auction an actual live stock market that is facilitated live in real time. The maximising of money generated through the marketplace is the core function and the lifeblood that nourishes our ecosystem.”
