Rising profits for Danish growers

In the Danish horticultural sector, vegetable growers again achieved the highest profits in 2017. They earned an average of nearly 150,000 euros for open field cultivation and more than 130,000 euros for greenhouses. The profit in the pot plant sector was slightly lower, on average around 115,000 euros, while nurseries and fruit orchards averaged 80,000 euros and 40,000 euros respectively. For pot plant growers and nurseries this represented an increase of 13,000 euros compared to 2016. The profit of the greenhouse vegetable growers, on the other hand, decreased, which was partly due to lower prices.

For all growers, the profit in 2017 was on average 80,000 euros, about the same as in 2016. This also has to do with price developments of the products. The yield in large horticultural businesses was greater than in smaller ones. The return of pot plant growers with less than 7,500 m2 of greenhouses came down to 2.2 percent, while companies with more than 15,000m2 of greenhouses achieved a return of 11.7 percent. This trend was also visible on the open field with 0.2 percent return for companies with less than 30 hectares and 5.9 percent on farms with more than 30 hectares.
