Cardboard being used more often to replace plastic packaging

The demand for sustainable packaging is only getting more significant and more urgent. Remmert Dekker Packaging has noticed this. This Dutch company produces cardboard packaging.

The demand for cardboard packaging is on the rise. This is thanks to retailers goals to be more sustainable. Consumers are also dissatisfied with the excessive use of plastic packaging.

Remmert Dekker Packaging: “The good thing about cardboard is that it is a natural, fully recyclable material made from a renewable source. Thanks to these excellent recycling possibilities, cardboard is an ideal packaging material for a circular economy.”

“Cardboard also lends itself extremely well to fruit and vegetables. Both are from natural origins. Research has been done. And it was found that, on average, fruit and vegetables last three days longer in cardboard."

"Consumers are opposed to the use of plastic in the fruit and vegetable department. Fewer plastic flow wrap bags and trays can be used too. Fortunately, things are changing in the store shelves."

Remmert Dekker Packaging wants to play an active role in this change. Currently, they already manufacture many containers, trays, and punnets. These are for products such as strawberries, soft fruit, avocados, and fruit vegetables.

Fruit and vegetables must be well-protected. But they must remain visible. Luckily, this is possible with just cardboard alone. By actively focusing on innovations like fine stamping, this company can make perforated windows. This makes glued-in windows unnecessary.

The fastest growing packaging market is for plastic tray substitutes. These include tomato and carrot trays, mushroom trays with lids, and asparagus top seal punnets. Cardboard trays are an excellent alternative for plastic. A bonus is that you can also print a nice design on them. You can even print something on the inside.

“We tailor-make everything and, so, look for the best possible solution. We also keep much more than just the content in mind. From the packer, logistical chain, retailer, and consumer to, ultimately, the recycling packaging processor."

Remmert Dekker's cardboard comes from European forests, mainly in Scandinavia. Here, trees and planted and processed for cardboard in a sustainable manner. Thanks to this, European forests are growing in size. The fact that trees absorb CO2 is an added benefit.

Remmert Dekker Packaging: “We are sustainably looking to the future. Our biggest challenge is to replace all plastic packaging completely. This is probably not possible for everything, such as meat and fish."

"However, when it comes to fruit and vegetables, we do not see why we still need plastics. With cardboard, everything is much fresher, more sustainable, and tastier. It is user-friendly, renewable, and is not harmful to the environment."
