State-of-the-art orchid greenhouse built in Poland

A state-of-the-art greenhouse for growing orchids has been created in Stężyca, near Lublin, Poland. It is also the largest investment in the history of Polish greenhouse horticulture. This large and modern greenhouse for flower production will use a range of ecological solutions. It is a very important investment not only for the region, but also for Poland.

The greenhouse will initiate a number of new solutions in cultivation. It was built by a family company, JMP Flowers. The value of the investment exceeded 51 million euros. The project was realized in stages over several years. The greenhouse covers an area of about 10 ha. 5 million phalaenopsis orchids will be grown there. This will significantly affect the Polish export of these flowers. The greenhouse is not only large in size, but also equipped with many modern technologies. It has energy-saving devices for heating and lighting installed.

The greenhouse has its own gas-fired power plant, and the carbon dioxide produced during the combustion of gas is purified and used for growing flowers. The plants then turn it into oxygen and discharge it into the atmosphere. In the summer, the greenhouse will store energy underground, as a result of natural heating. The heat obtained this way can then be used to heat the greenhouse. In the winter, it will store cold water, which can be used to cool it down during hot weather. The owners of the greenhouse are trying to give up pesticides, and instead they use sachets with ladybug eggs to fight aphids.

The greenhouse is also supposed to provide up-to-date knowledge about orchid cultivation. The owners opened a research and development centre equipped with a laboratory next to it. There, they research, among other things, new varieties of the flowers, which show greater resistance to various diseases.
