Poland: University researches influence of supplemental lighting on petunia

This year Plantalux have started cooperation with the Department of Ornamental Plants at the Warsaw University of Life Science. Various researches are conducted on bedding plants to assess the influence of supplemental lighting on plant blooming time, growth and habit. Researches are performed under the supervision of Agata Jędrzejuk.

The object of the tests is petunia hybrid with overhanging shoots. The one you see in the video above is the Dark Red variety with intensely red colored flowers. Four different light spectrums have been used:

  • white light;
  • 50% white and 50% red light;
  • 50% white and 50% blue light;
  • 33% white, 33% blue and 33% red light.

The best results were achieved with a light spectrum comprised of 50% white and 50% red light. Plants cultivated under such supplemental lighting were the first to bloom, have quite big flowers and are not too elongated. Also, they have quite a wide diameter thus they are well developed.
