Waste management facility in Turkey uses waste heat to grow flowers in greenhouses

The waste management and recycling facility run by the municipality of Eskisehir is also using the waste heat in growing colorful flowers in its greenhouses. The facility and greenhouses are often visited by students who are receiving their education in the area of sustainable management.

The city’s garbage problem was an important concern for many during the 1990s however with the municipality’s waste management facility, it is now become a source to generate electricity from waste. The facility at full capacity generates enough electricity to cover the electricity consumption of 95.000 households. The waste heat emerging from the recycling process is utilized in the municipality’s greenhouses where the staff is growing summer and winter flowers to be used to decorate the green areas and parks of the city.

The greenhouse staff notes that they have increased the number of varieties grown in the greenhouse and have recently expanded their production to include outdoor ornamental plants and various succulents.
