Local Inspiration Days

Floricultura Brazil puts a new appointment on growers’ and breeders’ calendars

Floricultura is one of the absolute superpowers when it comes to Phalaenopsis young plants. Since a few years ago the Dutch breeder boosts its own facilities in Brazil, while supplying many of the major South American growers. In order to highlight the assortment including the new Anthurium and Spathiphyllum range, growers are invited to come and admire no less than 130 varieties in the Floricultura showroom, April 3-4, in Holambra, Brazil. Besides growers, also fellow breeders of other crops are invited to join this initiative, making it into a sort of small-scale Spring Trials or FlowerTrials.

These Local Inspiration Days serve two main purposes. On the one hand Floricultura wants to show varieties particularly suitable for the Brazilian, or, for that matter, South American growers. Varieties that perform well here in cold and rainy Northern Europe often perform differently in tropical conditions and vice versa. So it is important to inform growers as much as possible and show them varieties that are suitable for their local situation. On the other hand, a well organised event is a very good way of attracting South American growers, that generally do not tend to frequently visit the showroom in the Netherlands.

It is not the first time that this kind of open days are organized by the company. In the summer of 2018 a show was organized, but the attention mostly went to the opening of the new Floricultura premises. In December, it was repeated, but then a number of novelties took centre stage. Both times 40 to 50 varieties were presented, which obviously is a lot, but by no means exhaustive.

That's why this time they really want to make it a big show. Growers are invited personally, while also fellow breeders of pot plants are also invited to join. "It's perhaps a bit of an exaggeration to speak of FlowerTrials or Spring Trials, but if a number of breeders join it might be a bit comparable. That would be awesome! We invite other breeders to join, as long as the products do not compete of course," Marc Eijsackers, the company's marketing director adds.

Every year in Holambra the Hortitec is organized. At this annual horticultural fair the whole of the South American floriculture sector is presented. “However, events comparable to this Local Inspiration Days are basically non-existent, even though the growers, like any of their colleagues in any other part of the world, are constantly looking for better varieties”, says area manager Marco Heijnen. Lastly, if any company is in a good position to organize it, Floricultura is. The company is well known throughout the South American market, is in contact with the large majority of growers, and aspires to broaden its already strong position in the market even further.
