A flower carpet of half a million tulips started blooming in Pskov region. They grow here the well-known yellow and red flowers as well as the newcomers. For instance, varieties named after the Chancellor of Germany, Ms. Angela Merkel or the conductor, Mr. Valery Gergiev. Tulips are grown here for the second year in a row. The whole team makes sure that they bring joy to the dwellers of Pskov in winter.
“These will be polypetalous ones, that big. And with a pink shade. They will be extremely polypetalous.”
The growers cannot wait to show the new varieties. They are especially proud of polypetalous tulips. They are grown in the complex for the first time. They have already been removed from the greenhouse and placed in special fridges, where their beauty will be preserved as long as possible at the temperature of three to six degrees.
The agronomists say that it is hard to surprise anyone with a regular flower, therefore the plant breeders are constantly working on improving the tulips' shape and color.
These tulips grow buds in the greenhouse, shares the agronomist, Ms. Elizaveta Borovaya. A tulip is a pretty but a fragile flower. It is picked only by most qualified associates.
“Here is a regular flower. But with good feeding we can get a high percentage of doubled and tripled ones. They look like polypetalous ones”, shares Ms. Elizaveta Borovaya, the agronomist of the greenhouse Zelyoniy Ostrov.
The biggest acreage is allocated to yellow tulips. They are in the highest demand with the dwellers of Pskov. The greenhouse grow about 200 thousand of them.
“We pick yellow tulips first. Two varieties, Strong and First Star start blooming first as we create the most suitable conditions for them: maximum air flow and proper temperature”, mentions Ms. Elizaveta Borovaya, the agronomist of the greenhouse Zelyoniy Ostrov.
