Dutch ornamental industry sets new records

The turnover at the auctions was higher. The turnover of cut flowers was supported by the supply. The average price in January 2020 was lower (-3.6%) compared to January 2019. In 2019, a record turnover of 1.8 billion was realized. A large contribution to this number were the results of December 2019. The prices for spray chrysanthemyum (regarding turnover the largest product) was positive in 2019 and the developments continued in January 2020 (+8.7%).

The price level for the most houseplants was higher the end of January comparing it with the end of 2019. The turnover of 2019 was 1.6 billion euro, 3.5% more than 2018. The amount of sold items in 2019 was 1.6% higher. The month December contributed largely to this record turnover. Green plants, including Ficus species, Zamioculcas, Draceana and Yucca, continue doing well regarding pricing and turnover. They are popular, partly because their "air purifying habit". In Addition, the turnover in January is traditionally high (Christmas tree out, house plan in).

In January the bedding plant season started with the sales of Pansies and Primulas. Due to the beneficial weather conditions, the pansy prices increased (+34%) with a larger supply (+51%). The supply of Primula increased as well (+47%), but the price decreased (-4.8%). In 2019, the turnover of garden plants was 3.1% higher compared to 2018. Volume and price contributed equally.

The export value of the ornamental products was 10% higher in January compared to 2019. With a nominal export value of 6.2 billion euro ornamental products, a new turnover record was reached. Particularly the trade in December was positive comparing it to one year earlier (+10%). The export value of pot- and garden plats increased in 2019 by 4.3% and reached 2.4 billion euro. The export of cut flowers reached 3.8 billion euro, 3.6% higher compared to 2018.
