Frank de Greef, Fleurizon, on Albuca Spiralis ‘Frizzle Sizzle':

"A good addition to succulent range"

Green plants are highly popular and this trend is far from over with new and special ones making headway. Fleurizon International, for example, introduced the Albuca Spiralis to the worldwide market some years ago, and it seems to have been a good move. "At fairs and retail locations, it is a real showstopper and many of our clients are increasing production of this pure pot plant year after year", says Fleurizon's Frank de Greef. And the market is still growing, particularly in the USA, Europe and now also in Japan, he says.

Albuca Spiralis
The Albuca Sprialis is a succulent-like variety that is originally from South Africa. The annual growing cycles is 7 to 8 months and the plant will go dormant for 3-4 months. The plant has curled foliage and flowers between June and August, for about 6 weeks. "The flower does not only look stunning, it also seems to have a good Vanilla scent", says de Greef

Good addition to succulent range
According to de Greef, the Albuca Spiralis is a good addition to the succulent range of a grower. "It can be combined easily, and it fits very well in a succulent garden", he says. But not only, we see the market now expanding to larger nursery size pot plant growers and growers who sell plants online. Fleurizon supplies the innovative clone (the leaves of the Frizzle Sizzle are much larger than the original species) of the original Albuca spiralis in 6cm to 12cm bulbs to garden centers, pot plant nurseries, plant and succulent growers all over the US, Europe and Japan from January to July. "Growing the bulb to a retail ready plant takes about 10 weeks and does not differ that much from succulent cultivation."

Increasing demand
Fleurizon firstly introduced it in Europe and later, they decided to enter the US with this variety. And so far, the response is positive. "Our customers are pleased with the reactions of their customers” And in the 5 years after the introduction, the Albuca Spiralis expanded very well in the worldwide market. "The market is still growing in USA, Europe and now also in Japan. With the green plants now in a boom, we are already seeing an increase in bookings for 2021. The growth of the bulbs for delivery in 2021 is very promising and we will have plenty available, even more than in 2020."
