China: 34-hectare rose project goes into production

Cut roses are among the flowers with the largest planting area and market share among cut flowers in China.

With the gradual expansion of middle-class groups with spending power, the market's demand for high-quality roses has gradually increased. More Chinese rose farmers introduced the Dutch planting model.

Currently, China's largest high-tech rose project is put into production in Lanzhou. The 34-hectare rose project is invested by the Lanzhou Agricultural Investment Company and operated by Aibida Technology Co., Ltd. It mainly grows Red Naomi, the most famous variety of Schreurs, and uses the most advanced soilless cultivation model of Dutch rose. Meteor Systems provided a gerbera and rose cultivation system for the 16 ha of this project.

However, with the increase in demand for factory planting of roses, more and more farms choose steel cultivation tanks of the Dutch model. In Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture, Baiyi Group invested in the 3 ha cut rose flower project, and Meteor Systems also provided a complete planting system for this project. It is expected that on Valentine's Day in 2021, this project can harvest the first batch of fresh cut roses.

Yunnan is the world's largest producer of fresh cut flowers, ranking first in the world in terms of area and output of fresh cut flowers. However, the current rose planting model in Yunnan is still based on soil planting or substrate bag model.

Compared with the substrate bag, the Meteor Systems cultivation tank uses a small substrate volume, and the feedback of water, fertilizer and disease on the crop is rapid, making the planting management more active. At the same time, the steel cultivation tank has less impurities in the backwater. In addition, the Dutch model has better ventilation near the cultivation trough, which can reduce the rate of pests and diseases. The use of cultivation tanks is a more modern and factory-based mode of rose production. Meteor Systems is also progressing several cut rose projects in Yunnan to provide localized soilless cultivation solutions for rose growers in Yunnan.
