High-tech expansion for Dutch Gerbera grower

In November 2020, Bosman Van Zaal started at Gerbera grower Schouten Opti-Fleurs, in Amstelveen, the Netherlands, where they are responsible for the engineering and construction of the greenhouse, hall, concrete work and heating including heat connection with the current company.

Schouten Opti-Fleurs is a Dutch Gerbera grower, who until now has only supplied large-flowered gerberas. With the expansion, Opti-Fleurs will also be able to supply mini gerberas, which ensures a strengthening within the Gerbera market. "Our strong position close to the auction in Aalsmeer enables us to provide customers directly with Gerberas in all sizes and packaging. In addition, the expansion will also bring scale advantages," says Bart Schouten, co-owner of Schouten Opti-Fleurs. Completion is planned for summer 2021.

New building: Venlo greenhouse, hall and technical room
The new building consists of a Venlo greenhouse and a hall, and will be built at Meerlandenweg 49-51 in Amstelveen, opposite from the current company. The Venlo greenhouse has a surface area of 29,645 m² and consists of four sections of 7,296 m² each. In addition, a double screen has been chosen. Both the hall and the technical room consist of a wide span construction, one is 480 m² and the other is 1,725 m². For the four departments in the greenhouse, we are installing tube-rail heating, top heating, floor heating and a CO₂ installation. The heating of the new building will be connected to the current company.

IIVO climate computer
The latest climate computer, IIVO of Hoogendoorn, is installed in the new building. IIVO constantly and consistently monitors all aspects of the greenhouse, including climate conditions, water management, energy management and collects data to create a complete, holistic overview of the greenhouse conditions. The computer is installed by Kandelaar Elektrotechniek.

Collaboration between Schouten Opti-Fleurs and Bosman Van Zaal
"The collaboration with Bosman Van Zaal has so far gone well," says Bart Schouten. "Right from the start, we wanted to set up our new company with existing partners, and BVZ is one of them. In the preliminary stages, it is particularly important that everything is drawn up properly, since the factory is digitally controlled. BVZ also took care of the license application. The great advantage of BVZ being responsible for the construction of the greenhouse, hall, concrete work and heating is that the planning can be properly coordinated. This gives us some peace of mind. Managing the subcontractors is very important. Ultimately, we hope to achieve a good result together with the other participants.”
