Discover unusual plants in Florida research garden

Small plant sales and exchanges are a lot of fun as it is a good opportunity to learn something, see what other gardeners are growing, and what plants do well in Tallahassee.

One of the best plant sales happens twice a year pre-COVID, and will probably return soon. It takes place outside of Quincy, Florida at the UF/IFAS North Florida Research and Education Center (NFREC).

This center is just north of I-10 at Pat Thomas Parkway (SR 267) on the west side. NFREC’s programs are part of the University of Florida’s statewide Extension service and they experiment and research various plants, crops, and processes that might be suitable for North Florida. This includes vegetables, row crops, forages, ornamentals, tree fruits, and forests.

On their 1,000 acres of irrigated and non-irrigated land, they have one of the largest collections of magnolia trees in the United States and they house one of Florida’s state-wide plant diagnostic laboratories.

The Gardening Friends of the Big Bend is holding an online plant sale this week for the North Florida Research and Education Center. More information about the sale can be obtained from: https://my-site-gfbb.square.site/s/shop.
