HMM pilots IoT tech in reefer containers

Hyundai Merchant Marine will try out Internet of Things (IoT) technology on the shipping of refrigerated and frozen containers.

According to an HMM statement, “it’s crucial for refrigerated and frozen containers to maintain a constant temperature to their destination. If IoT equipment is installed in refrigerated and frozen containers, not only can the location of cargo be identified in real time, but real-time information such as changes in temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide, and vibration of reefers loaded on ships can be checked and controlled from anywhere.”

By year-end, the South Korean carrier expects to complete the IoT equipment installation on 1,000 reefer boxes, planning to pilot the technology for one to two years before using it on its entire refrigerated fleet.
