“Double-stemmed and multi-flowered phalaenopsis become popular in China”

The phalaenopsis is one of the most popular flowers during the Chinese new year time, and there are always many of them on the market before the Spring Festival every year. How has the Phalaenopsis market in China changed in recent years? In this article Yi Wu, General Manager of Floricultura Horticulture (Zhejiang) Co., Ltd., and Sales Director of Asia in Floricultura B.V. in the Netherlands tell us all about it.

Floricultura is one of the world's largest Phalaenopsis orchid breeding companies, and they combine breeding and seedling production and sales and provide tens of millions of seedlings to growers around the world every year for the production and cultivation of potted and cut flowers.

Yi Wu joined the company in December 2018 and is mainly responsible for the development of the Asian market. According to Wu, the company began to build its own tissue culture lab in Zhejiang Province in 2021, and the first stage of the plan will be completed in 2022. Before setting up a company in China, they also thought about finding a long-term OEM business partner. However, in order to control the quality, capacity, and cost of seedlings more effectively, a new branch was eventually established.

Yi Wu is very optimistic about the Chinese market. "Phalaenopsis have been cultivated in China for about 30 years. Traditionally, Chinese customers like single-stemmed, large-sized, and brightly colored flowers with neat inflorescences, which are mainly given as gifts in pots and packaging for the New Year. This is different from the current sales in Europe. However, as more and more young people become the main consumers, their aesthetic has also undergone some changes. Double/multi-stemmed, bifurcated, multi-flowered products in 12 cm, 9 cm, and 6 cm single pots have become a new popular trend, which provides an opportunity for European varieties. At the same time, China's e-commerce economy is rising rapidly, the market size is increasing, and the price of a small and medium-sized single plant of Phalaenopsis orchid is more attractive than that of potted Phalaenopsis orchids because its packaging is simple, it is convenient with logistics and more suitable for online circulation for personal and family consumption. ”

China has a large population, and it has very large market potential. With the improvement of living standards, people's demand for flowers continues to increase. Wu explains that Floricultura can provide a complete range of colors of Phalaenopsis. The products have a high rate of getting double stem and multi stems, and the number of branches and flowers is large. Their detoxified seedlings are virus-free and robust with high inflorescence. The growth rate of the products is fast, and they have a good reputation in the market. In order to meet the needs of different customers, the company has grouped Phalaenopsis products into Lingua series; Elastica series; Flowerful series; Eccentrix series; AromorA series; Multiflora series; Standard series, etc.

Now that there are more and more smart greenhouses in China, automated and semi-automated production has begun. There is an urgent need for high-quality, stable seedlings to meet its annual production. Companies like Floricultura, which can provide stable and high-quality seedlings on a large scale, are very popular in the market. The first phase of Floricultura China project is planning to have about 5 million plants production, and it will be expanded to more than 20 million plants in the later stage.

As of now, Floricultura China is developing rapidly and they welcome talents with their own unique insights, full of desire for the future, sufficient sensitivity to new consumer groups, willingness to learn new knowledge, and full of innovation. Floricultura will provide an open and inclusive environment so that they can grow together with employees.
