Michael de Geus, Select Breeding

Select Breeding puts renewed assortment of patio roses in the spotlight

In a new product video, Select Breeding puts the spotlight on the updated assortment of patio roses. The breeder sees strong growth in the popularity of the product for two reasons. On the one hand, it can count on more interest from the consumer, and on the other, the grower in his search for crops that require little energy is becoming increasingly interested in it.

"Especially outside the Netherlands, the cultivation is still quite unknown," knows Michael de Geus, one of the owners of Select Breeding. "If I say 'garden rose' in Germany, for example, people don't think of a greenhouse at all. There, the plant automatically falls into the tree nursery category, but you have to situate it in the more luxurious tub and pot plant range because of its exuberant blooms during delivery. The patio rose can of course be grown outdoors, but if you bring it indoors then you can get to market sooner, while still retaining the typical garden rose characteristics such as winter hardiness and strong resistance."

Grown in the greenhouse or tunnel, without heating or lighting, one can deliver beautiful plants as early as mid-April. "Whether a little earlier or a little later, that depends a little on the location of course, but the fact is that production can be brought forward anywhere in Europe. That has the additional sustainable advantage that cultivation is literally brought closer to the consumer."

Select Breeding, originally a breeder of cut roses, also started to focus on breeding patio roses a few years ago (we wrote about it earlier, see this article, among others). The company now has eight colorful and richly flowering varieties, all of which produce flowers with a diameter of 11 to 13 cm.

Pot cover
To give the product even more appeal, Select Breeding will soon be presenting a new pot cover. "In this way, we hope to use photos and additional information to inspire consumers and show them what the possibilities are."
