Kristin Hoskins picked a bouquet of gorgeous poppies Friday at her business a few miles outside of Wichita Falls. Iceland poppies and hummingbird poppies seemed to jostle each other for attention in the vase.
Now in her third year as owner of Three Way Flower Farm, Kristin started her growing concern under the blue skies of the North Texas prairie in Archer County. “I'm a farmer florist, and I grow all of my own flowers," she said.
With spring underway, that means 3,000 tulips, plus sweet William, dusty miller with its popular foliage for wedding arrangements, and much more — all locally grown. Kristin is a pharmacist with a serious side gig that provides a feast for the eyes and nose on one-third of an acre. Named for 3 Way Road, the flower farm is about 15 miles from Wichita Falls.
She said locally grown flowers have advantages ranging from being better for the local economy, to having a smaller carbon footprint and lasting longer for consumers than imported flowers. "A lot of the flowers I give to people are in the field growing the day before," Kristin said.
