Online plant shop to deliver packaging-free in the Randstad

Plantje.nl, the online plant shop, is introducing packaging-free delivery. An unusual step for webshops in general, but certainly for the plant sector. The company even claims to be the first plant shop in the Netherlands to offer packaging-free delivery. This means that the plants are no longer packed in cardboard boxes with filling material but are simply transported in reusable containers. According to Plantje.nl, this way of delivering is not only more sustainable but also takes away a lot of inconveniences.

A step beyond government policy
When you have items delivered online, you can usually count on a lot of packaging waste. This also applies to the average plant shop. As of 2021, companies are required to take recycling into account when designing packaging. This means that a certain percentage of the packaging must be recycled. Plantje.nl goes one step further than the government policy in this respect by forsaking packaging for the most part.

First reactions
As the first plant shop with the ambition of delivering packaging-free, Plantje.nl had no concrete example to follow. Before the company could make the definitive step, an extensive test phase was in order. By staying in close contact with its customers, Plantje.nl was able to optimize packaging-free delivery.

Orders can now be delivered without a cardboard box and packaging materials. Instead, the customer receives their order in a reusable container, which the delivery driver takes back with them. For the time being, however, the company will retain the traditional plastic plant sleeve in which plants are usually delivered by the grower.

From the Randstad to every address in the Netherlands
Plantje.nl currently offers packaging-free delivery throughout the Randstad area. The company's ambition is to extend this service to the rest of the country in the short term. So far, package-free deliveries are going well in the Randstad area, with many positive reactions.

Packaging-free delivery remains an option. Although Plantje.nl recommends this new delivery option, the choice is up to the customer.

More convenience for the recipient
Traditional packaging is mainly convenient for the sender and carrier. The environment and the recipient are usually the victims of this, according to the people who devised this step. By delivering packaging-free, the recipient is no longer left with a huge pile of packaging waste. Especially in big cities, where the online ordering of plants is popular, this was an irritation point. Thanks to packaging-free delivery, the recipient can enjoy the ordered plants immediately.
