Brazil orchid grower uses biomass to heat the greenhouse

Sítio Kolibri is a company that grows Phalaenopsis orchids in Brazil, in Holambra city, in the state of São Paulo. The company is focused on growing the best Phalaenopsis but is always looking to do that combined with sustainability.

For that reason, Sítio Kolibri has been using a biomass heating system for their greenhouse ever since 2010. This heating system enabled the company to reduce their use of fossil fuels and switch to renewable energy. In 2020 the company bought a new and more efficient biomass boiler.

The generation of energy is, without a doubt, one of the biggest environmental issues of the floriculture industry and, therefore, the most interesting possibility of change for companies that want to be more sustainable to the market and to consumers. With the use of biomass for energy generation, it is possible to unite a great energy potential to the alleviation of environmental problems. In addition to lower carbon emissions, biomass is a by-product of wood and, unlike fossil fuels, it is renewable.

"Our company uses biomass from eucalyptus forests, also known as energy forests, that are cultivated especially for that purpose," says Regina Gruisen Breg, Commercial Director at the company. "Normally, the eucalyptus that we use the wood is from São Paulo state or Minas Gerais state."

Sítio Kolibri also finalized a new project in May 2022: solar panels. "Today, we have 4.000 solar panels installed in our company. Together they guarantee 1,5 megawatts of power. That is the equivalent of the consumption of about 500 houses! That energy is enough to meet the energy demand of the company in 100% and make Sítio Kolibri a self-sufficient company in energy," Regina concludes.
