Marco Zwaan, Koen Pack USA, on their move

US (FL): "This new building enables us to drastically reduce our carbon footprint"

Koen Pack USA recently moved to a new location in Doral, Miami (FL). "This new building is bigger, more modern, better located, and above all, it enables us to reduce our carbon footprint as we will be producing our own pot covers," says Marco Zwaan, CEO of North America of this flower and plant packaging company.

Reason for the move
Koen Pack decided to stay in the same area as the former location because the majority of the wholesalers are here, and this way, we can stay close to our clients. So why move? The new location is logistically a bit better with a new and larger showroom and a better office environment, but the main reason is that the new location is a lot larger, which allows for in-house pot cover production.

Pot cover market in North America
"Pot covers are a product that is being used extensively in North America. I would say it is something typical North American. Pot covers have been used for more than 20 years, and it is a product many supermarkets are choosing as it is an easy and low-cost way to upgrade the plants. There is a huge product market and the demand for this product is still growing. To give an impression, at our location in Canada, we expect to produce 30 million pot covers in 2023."

Why own production in the USA?
This new location will enable Koen Pack to have its own production of pot covers in the USA. But why this large investment? We used to import from China, but because it is a high-volume product, resulting in a lot of "air" transportation, we had been thinking about starting up our own production in North America and the US for years. In addition, due to container issues, like lack of space and sky-high prices, we decided to move forward and have been developing this exciting initiative over the last 1.5 years, he says. Zwaan adds: "It is still a large investment as the machines are custom made, but transportation costs will decrease drastically, up to 95%, in turn reducing our carbon footprint."

Advantages for clients
The decrease in transportation costs will also have an advantage for our clients. Zwaan explains, "There are two major advantages, namely price and quality. Regarding price, even though initially it is a large investment, the prices will go down as we drastically cut transportation costs. And regarding quality, In Canada, we also produce our own pot covers with a machine that has been designed and built in cooperation with a local machine builder. We see that it delivers products of constant quality."

Ready in Spring
In Spring, the machines are expected to run at the new location. A large showroom is also currently being built. 'We will inform our clients when it will open its doors.'
