UV disinfection - it is a nice technique, but the service around it can still be tricky, especially when it comes to replacing the lamps. At Tuprotec, in collaboration with Hallett, they have now come up with a solution for this. Tuprotec director Lies van Geest talks about this new invention, the 'crossfire' effect.
"In this, the lamps are no longer suspended in the water but are placed outside the water. Because they are in a mirror chamber, this allows the water in the tube to be disinfected. Thanks to a spindle, the water in the tube rotates, so it cannot cause contamination on the tube either."
The UV Pure sanitizer, as the product is called, is equipped with a sensor with three functions: it measures the light transmission of the water, whether the lamps are functioning properly, and whether there is no contamination on the mirrors. "It is therefore a self-servicing system," he says.
Should the bulbs need to be replaced, this is very easy. "The system is easy to open, and within five minutes, you can change two bulbs in no time."
Better quality, less energy
Lies goes on to say that the UV Pure ensures better quality: "The Hallett can still clean well even with only 30 percent light transmission in the water. Because the UV comes from outside, through a mirror chamber, the intensity of the UV light is much higher. So with less energy, you achieve more."
And another advantage: because the tubes are not in the water, the water does not heat up like it does in traditional systems.

That the UV Pure is a successful invention is shown by the interest from the market: "They will be installed in all Boeing Dreamliners, in Airbuses, and they are also in use at German water treatment plants. There is also interest in horticulture, but we notice in the Netherlands that growers want to wait and see."
And that while Lies has several UV Pure systems available, also for use in horticulture: the smallest version can process 6.2 cubic meters of water per hour, and then there is also a model for 8.5 cubic meters per hour and one that can handle 17 cubic meters per hour. "And they can be placed back to back - so very flexible, especially since it is so easy to change the bulbs. In the process, you can handle dirtier water, and you use less energy because you don't put the heat into the water."
