"It's with great sadness that we announce that the last of our "H's", Hugh Stevenson, has passed away peacefully in Guernsey," the team with UK nursery Double H shares.
Double H Nurseries grows a variety of plants and supply some of the UK's largest supermarkets with products. Hugh set up Double H in 1961 with Helmut Gimmler. "He was a driving force in the development of the business, and in UK horticulture, for many years."
The origins of Double H go back four generations, to when Joe Stevenson grew Sweet Peas and Carnations in a Nursery to the east of New Milton. Hugh Stevenson moved to the existing site on Gore Road in 1961 to start growing Chrysanthemums; soon after this, he joined forces with Helmut Gimmler to form Double H Nurseries. They built a successful and traditional nursery, competing against other UK growers and sending plants by rail to wholesale markets for sale to florists. Currently, Andy Burton, grandson of Hugh Stevenson, is the Managing Director of the company.
