Dehumidification has been one of the tools growers started using years ago to improve their climate, but it has also proven to be a game-changer in saving energy. Yesterday, several Dutch growers shared their experiences with the DryGair installation.
Energy saving has been a hot topic in the Dutch greenhouse industry, and in the near future, it will also become a necessity as the government obliges growers to lower their energy consumption. Over the last couple of years, more and more growers opted for a dehumidification installation, Eef Zwinkels, DryGair specialist at Royal Brinkman, shared. “Growers around the world report energy savings averaging 50%, leading to an ROI of 1-3 years”, added his colleague Hans Belt. “But saving energy in commercial-scale CEA isn’t just about reducing costs.” The growers opening their doors for the international group of visitors also shared how it improves their cultivation.
One of the growers doing so is Anthura, who specializes in breeding and propagating orchids and anthurium pot plants and has been using dehumidification in their crop. At their facility, which also was the first stop of the tour, the international participants could see the DryGair installation at work in the anthurium greenhouse. In addition to Hans and Eef and the growers of Anthura, also Ziv Shaked, VP of Sales and Marketing, MARCOM Manager Hanni Sebag Montefiore, regional manager Amir Kandlik, and newly appointed CEO Tal Netzer were present.
The tour continued to the facility of Koolhaas Natuurlijk, growers of gerberas and germinis, who combine dehumidification and screens in their cultivation. The day was concluded at Santini nursery De Landscheiding, where the season is in full swing, and picking of the Calimero varieties happens on a daily basis. Dehumidification is of high importance to keep the quality high throughout the season and to lower their energy consumption.
