JUB Holland is to collaborate with the Steenbreek Foundation. The over 100-year-old flower bulb company, based in Noordwijkerhout, has a wide range in both retail and landscape ranges and wants to contribute to a green and colorful environment.
"The philosophy of Steenbreek, 'A green, healthy living environment,' is in line with our mission to bring more greenery and diversity to public spaces," says Robbert Uittenbogaard of JUB Holland. "In addition, we believe that by collaborating more with each other, we can achieve more and reach a wider target group."
When asked what the company wants to get out of the collaboration with Steenbreek, Uittenbogaard says: "We hope to share knowledge and cooperate with each other, especially in the field of civic initiatives and citizen participation."
Environmentally conscious cultivation
JUB Holland is committed to the sustainable and environmentally conscious cultivation of flower bulbs. In the field, the company strives to minimize the use of plant protection products. Jub Holland was also one of the initiators of the PlanetProof certificate for flower bulbs. "Moreover, through breeding, we try to grow new tulip varieties that are less susceptible to diseases," said Uittenbogaard.
Flower bulb weekend
Interest in flower bulbs has been increasing in recent years; for example, the first National Flower Bulb Weekend will be held in the first weekend of October. The campaign, set up by landscape architect Ada Wille in collaboration with Stichting Steenbreek, aims to promote the planting of flower bulbs in autumn to ensure bumblebees and bees have enough food in spring.
Uittenbogaard: "The use of flower bulbs in public green spaces makes a great contribution to biodiversity. Especially in early spring, food is still scarce in nature. Spring flowering bulbs are a nice addition, then. But it is also a nice addition to public spaces for people. Spring flowering announces the end of winter, which many people love."
Organic bulbs
Both Stichting Steenbreek and JUB Holland promote buying and planting organic bulbs; these are guaranteed to be free of chemicals.
"However, we are still running into major challenges with growing organic flower bulbs," says Uittenbogaard. "But we do see, fortunately, that within the sector, there has been a huge step forward in sustainable cultivation in recent years. In the coming years, we hope to see even more cooperation and knowledge sharing within the sector."
