Where garden centers were once glorified greenhouses from which flowers and plants were sold, they are now more often full-fledged retail stores filled with luxury goods. Such modern garden centers focus on sustainability. This is also reflected in the new construction projects they commission.
An example is the new construction of Spek Fresh & Garden Center in Zevenhuizen. Nobutec is building the garden center. The company specializes in special greenhouse construction projects and the construction of garden centers.
Special gutter
Owner Ron van der Burg has become increasingly involved in the garden center branch of the greenhouse construction company over the years. He has seen the construction of garden centers evolve. "So far, many projects have been carried out with column drains, where the cold water is drained through the greenhouse column. Each greenhouse column was a cooling fin. You can't beat that. In addition, the gutters also overflowed quite often, which caused leakage."
The new garden center in Zevenhuizen - "it's going to be a very big one by garden center standards" - is getting a special gutter that will make strides in sustainability. It is a wide, walkable insulated gutter, which prevents cold bridges in the store, Ron explains. "The gutters also no longer condense."
Another new construction project in the garden center world, an Intratuin in Hulst, is equipped with the gutter developed by Nobutec itself. That project is already finished. The construction in Zevenhuizen is still in full swing. The garden center shares construction updates weekly. The new garden center will be better insulated, which will result in energy savings as well as more comfort for visitors.
