Colombia: Children’s parade highlights Medellín’s flower festival tradition

Around 2,700 children aged four to eleven paraded through Medellín dressed as farmers, carrying colorful flower arrangements, keeping the tradition alive at the start of the 67th Feria de las Flores, which runs until August 11 with over 100 public activities.

The streets of Medellín were transformed this Saturday with the vibrant Desfile de Silleteritos. This unique children's parade, featuring around 2,700 youngsters aged between four and eleven, is a testament to the city's rich cultural heritage. Dressed as traditional farmers and carrying light flower arrangements on their backs, the children celebrate and preserve Antioquia's unique traditions.

Following the inaugural concert on Friday night and the opening of the Plaza de las Flores at two locations in the city, the first significant event of the festival was the Desfile de Silleteritos. This parade is dedicated to children, encouraging them to embrace the customs of their ancestors and feel a deep connection to their regional identity. The spectacle, now in its 35th edition, showcased the young participants parading through the La Floresta neighborhood to the applause of hundreds of spectators.

"This is the third oldest parade in the Feria de las Flores. It started in the La Floresta neighborhood park with a small nursery and has grown to feature 2,700 children today, teaching them about Antioquian traditions," said Gustavo Ortega, the organizer of this children's parade, in an interview with EFE.
