When asked whether he prefers his plants or geothermal energy, Leon Ammerlaan paused for a while. He clearly has a passion for his green Dracaenas, Yuccas, and Kentias, but his eyes truly light up when he talks about geothermal energy. This was evident when the Province of South Holland interviewed him for their magazine, Zuid-Holland in Beeld.
In 2007, when the gas price rose from 10 to 40 cents, Leon began exploring alternative ways to heat his greenhouse. By 2010, he had successfully established his first geothermal well. Reflecting on his experience, Leon wishes he had the knowledge then that he has now, saying it would have helped him avoid many mistakes. He believes geothermal energy holds significant potential, but emphasizes the need for heating networks to expand its use. "To maintain horticulture and industry in the Netherlands, we need solutions like these," he asserts.
